MSPs back our call for opt out organ donor system

If you have read our last post, about Bobby Singh's struggle for a donor, then you will understand how pleased to are to present this post to you. The Evening Times has released an article that tells us MSP's are backing our opt out organ donor system.

Here is the Article from The Evening Times by Stewart Paterson:

A MOTION backing the Evening Times Opt For Life campaign has received cross party support in the Scottish Parliament.

Glasgow SNP MSP Humza Yousaf lodged the motion calling on the Parliament to back the call for an opt out scheme.

Mr Yousaf said he fully supported the need to increase the number of donor organs to save more lives.

We want to persuade the Scottish Government to launch an ‘opt out’ system of organ donation where everyone is automatically placed on the donor register.

It would mean that, unless people opt out or relatives object, hospitals would be allowed to use their organs for transplants.

The system is supported by the British Medical Association and major charities including the British Heart Foundation and Kidney Research UK.

Mr Yousaf has launched a motion in support of our campaign backed by SNP colleagues, including Glasgow MSPs John Mason, Bill Kidd, Labour MSP Drew Smith and Green MSP for the city Patrick Harvie. In total 23 MSPs have signed the motion.

Mr Yousaf’s motions states: “That the Parliament recognises the growing calls for Scotland to have an opt out organ donation system; endorses the Evening Times campaign, Opt For Life, which calls for a presumed consent system in Scotland; believes that this will greatly increase the availability of donor organs; understands with concern that three people die needlessly each day due to the lack of donors on the national register, and recognises that any system should have appropriate and accessible safeguards for those who wish to opt out.

The motion has support from MSPs from the SNP, Labour and Greens from across Scotland.

At the SNP Conference last week, in Inverness, delegates voted to call on the Scottish Government to examine the case for an opt out system.

Mr Yousaf, said: “I’m delighted to give my support to the Evening Times’ Opt For Life campaign. Far too many men, women and children die needlessly every week in Scotland due to a lack of organs. It is incredibly important that we continue educational programmes and actively encourage others to register to donate their organs.

However, it is time we had a serious debate about how many lives an opt-out system would save. I commend all those who are working hard on this campaign and helping to transform the lives of thousands.

HOW CAN YOU HELP

WE need your help to make this happen and save more lives. Sign our petition to lend your support to an ‘opt out’ system for organ donation at www.eveningtimes.co.uk.

How can you help ?

Here we have an article about Bobby Singh, published by the Evening Times.

A RESTAURATEUR who almost died after buying a kidney transplant abroad has backed the Evening Times’ campaign to launch an ‘opt out’ system of organ donation in Scotland.

Bobby Singh, 46, from Glasgow, believes an opt-out policy – where the default position is that everyone is a donor – would vastly increase his chances of receiving the life-saving kidney transplant he needs.

The father-of-three made the “desperate” decision to pay £22,000 for a transplant in Pakistan in 2005 after being on the register for five years.

However, he became gravely ill during his flight back to Glasgow. Doctors found the new organ was dying and removed it.

Remarkably, despite almost losing his life, Mr Singh admits he has again considered buying another kidney because he is still waiting for a transplant seven years on.

His situation has been made worse because of an acute shortage of registered kidney donors from the Asian community. People from black and ethnic minorities wait, on average, twice as long as others on the list. He knows of another Asian man who has been waiting 25 years.

Mr Singh said: “It’s very hard. How long can a person stay positive? I am thinking about going abroad again and I know I might not come out of it alive.

I have contemplated suicide, I am on anti-depressants. For me to get a transplant would be a total change of life.

I would feel the same as the Scottish couple who won £161million on the Lottery. Better in fact.

Around 90% of patients on the transplant list across the UK are waiting for a kidney.

The restaurateur was a healthy and fit father-of-three, working long hours in the family business, Mr Singh’s India, when he began to feel unwell during a Scotland match at Hampden Park in November 2004.

His condition deteriorated and his brother, Satty, took him to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where blood samples were taken.

Until then, the keen footballer jokes he had never spent any time in hospital apart from the day he was born. A nurse told him both kidneys had shut down. He was put straight on to dialysis, a process that continues to this day.

Dialysis cleans waste products from the blood when the kidneys fail. Without it, all patients with kidney failure would die from the build-up of toxins in the bloodstream.

However, it requires Mr Singh to be in the New Victoria Hospital three times a week for five hours at a time.

He said: “You don’t live a normal life. I used to be quite hands-on in the business, but I have not got the energy to do much now.

I used to enjoy going out and having a beer, but I am allowed only a tumbler of liquid a day, otherwise it will put pressure on my kidneys.

I can’t go on holiday with my family, only day trips.

Mr Singh is backing our campaign to persuade the Scottish Government to introduce an opt-out policy on organ donation, where people could still easily opt-out or giving organs and relatives would still be consulted.

Supporters argue there would be substantial economic benefits for the NHS, as well as the potential to save thousands more lives.

Mr Singh said: “It costs about £1100 a week to keep me alive – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, including the expensive drugs I take, and the injections when on dialysis.

Some people do eight hours a day.

People are dying waiting for a transplant. Many organs are going to waste.

I think Scotland could do it alone. If we go for opt out, the public do not have to do anything apart from tell their loved ones.

I understand most people are scared of death and talking about it. I would be scared of dying too if I was healthy.

Mr Singh visits mosques around the city to help raise awareness about organ donation amongst the Asian population, which has a very low uptake on the national register.

Last year his restaurant hosted the launch of Scotland’s first Kidney Research UK kidney disease awareness scheme.

The peer-educator’ initiative targets sections of the population, including communities where close family members have been diagnosed with kidney disease, and ethnic communities, like his Asian community, where there is a prevalence of high blood pressure and diabetes.

Dr Neerja Jain, of Kidney Research UK, said: “Asians are up to five times more likely to get kidney failure than the white community, but they are much less likely to get a transplant. The number of people within ethnic minorities who carry donor cards is also significantly lower.

Generally, people in the black and ethnic community are waiting almost twice as long for transplant, if at all.

People within the south Asian population also have a disproportionately high rate of diabetes and high blood pressure.

An Asian person on dialysis is 10 times more likely to get kidney failure than someone from the white community. We don’t really know why.”

HOW YOU CAN HELP

WE need your help to make this happen and save more lives. Lines are open 24 hours a day all year round. Calls are charged at your contracted rate for local calls.

Curry pies return to Scotland's stadiums !!

We can imagine that most men in the country will be as excited as us that we now have some great football to watch. But there is another reason to get excited for the Scottish Premier League to be started again.

Mister Singh's Curry Pies !! Now that we have action packed fixtures gracing the stadiums of Scotland again, you can now discuss the game's action over our award winning curry pies.

Since the launch of the curry pies over a year ago, they have been a massive hit not only within the football grounds, but in the restaurant as well, with sports stars like cricket legend Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff expressing his love for our pies. Andrew visited the restaurant in August this year, he then tweeted a picture of the pie stating he had "died and gone to heaven".

We have been so pleased as to how the curry pie has been received since the launch, a memorable event for Mister Singh's with the likes of
Alan Rough
, Derek Johnstone and John Collins to name but three of the former Scotland internationals on hand to unveil the country's first authentic curry pie in Glasgow. Also at the launch were Stephen Hendry, Kenny Dalglish & I Durrant.

We would like to thank everyone who has shown their support to us, and to everyone who has enjoyed one (or more) of our pies.

The pies are available at Rangers, Celtic, St Mirren, Hibs, Dundee Utd, Inverness, Dunfermline, Partick Thistle, Clyde, Dumbarton, Dundee and of course the National Stadium, Hampden Park.

Cricket Legend at Mister Singh's

Last night Mister Singh's played host to a man who was referred to as one of the biggest crowd-pleasers and most feared all-rounder of his generation.

Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff dined at Mister Singh's last night, and after his meal he tweeted about our award winning curry pie. But not only did he mention that he had "died and gone to heaven", he even uploaded a picture of his order while singing our praise.

"@flintoff11: In a curry house in glasgow and they have a curry pie ! I've died and gone to heaven ! http://yfrog.com/hs3tjmosj"

We would like to thank Andrew for coming in, and we are delighted to hear that he loved our Curry Pie. Andrew is currently working on the AF Foundation, after retiring from professional Cricket, a charity based on refurbishing Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy Departments within UK hospitals. We would like to wish Andrew the best luck in completing their mission, and hope he can stop by and see us soon.

Mister Singh's wins Environmental Business Award from Glasgow City Council

Since Joining the climate change business group in 2007, Mister Singh's India has been committed to reducing our carbon footprint. In 2008 Mister Singh's India took part in a case study along with Jonathan Fallis from Envirowise, Derek McNabb from Mabbett Associates and Davina Wyper from Serco.

This resulted in strategies being implemented such as best practice through energy reduction, and the efficient use of energy efficient equipment. The restaurant had timing switches fitted to reduce energy consumption. The soft drinks refrigerators are set on a timer to switch off overnight, this reduces energy and has no detriment to the products. We also reduce waste and re-use and recycle.

As a result of all of these implementations, Mister Singh's India won the Silver Award and we are working towards a Gold Award.

At the Cash For Kids charity lunch in December 2010, Mister Singh's India donated a Haggis Pakora Master Class as a an auction prize. The JR Group purchased the Master Class and fatBuzz filmed the event taking place at Mister Singh's Indian restaurant in Elderslie St, Glasgow. Clyde 1 DJ, Romeo came along on the day to taste test the JR Group's cooking skills. A good day was had by all involved raising much needed funds for Children in Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

The Scottish Curry Awards 2011

The Scottish Curry Awards were established in 2008 to recognise and reward the curry industry in Scotland. At the moment Glasgow is the curry capital of the UK.

The Scottish Curry Awards focus not only on the effort that goes into each dish, but the preparation, efficiency and presentation and also the attitude and the devotion of the nominee.

On Monday 23rd May 2011, The Thistle Hotel in Glasgow is where the award ceremony will be held. Please download the nomination form and vote for Mister Singh's India.

The Scottish Curry Awards want to expose and reward inspirational commitment within the curry industry and to keep up the momentum that pride equals quality when producing these meals. Not only does the Scottish Curry Awards reward the humble curry but they work in conjunction with the Scottish Spina Bifida Association as their charity partner to help gain awareness and generate much needed funds for this charity.
